Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed this Monday that it is a “lie” that he is persecuting his opponent and presidential candidate Ricardo Anaya, who this weekend accused the president of seeking to imprison him.
“He accuses of being persecuted by the president, by me, and that is a lie, that is false. What is the origin of this situation? A complaint that was presented for a long time by his own party colleagues”, assured López Obrador in his morning press conference.

Anaya, who ran in the 2018 presidential elections against López Obrador, said on Saturday that the president wants to imprison him to prevent him from being a candidate in 2024.

The politician of the conservative National Action Party (PAN) detailed this Monday that he received a summons to testify in the northern prison of Mexico City for crimes that add up to 30 years in prison.

But López Obrador responded that the events stem from accusations by PAN rivals and from the complaint by Emilio Lozoya, former director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), who a year ago targeted Anaya for receiving bribes from Odebrecht to approve the 2013 energy reform.
The controversy erupts a year after the presentation of the complaint by Lozoya, former head of Pemex (2012-2016) and main implicated in the corruption scheme of Odebrecht for receiving 10.5 million dollars in bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht for the campaign of Peña grandson.
